Book Review: 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami

Literary SF 4/

Aomame, a top-class assassin, fulfills her contract and must hide, while Tengo, a writer hired to edit a novel which seems to portray real, unfolding events, is drawn into her world. I thoroughly enjoyed the complex twists of this thriller, though I did find it to be overly-long with a disappointing ending.

Book Review: The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee

Nonfiction 5+/5

Oncologist Mukherjee shares stories from his practice as well as captivating details from the colourful personalities instrumental in the development of cancer surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Not only was this book a fascinating read, full of stories about real historical personages and their amazing discoveries—and the politics that helped or hindered them—you also learn a lot about cancer and its treatment.

A Pause to Edit

The editing job is going well. I’ve finished reading the novel, but I’m taking a moment before doing the write-up because I want to do an editing pass on my own novel before I submit it to my beta readers, and my editing contract deadline is not until May.

Book Review: Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

Fantasy 4+/5

Zélie accidentally rescues a princess who has stolen her father’s scroll: an artifact that can restore the magical ability of deviners like Zélie. I really enjoyed this story, particularly the wonderful characters and amazing settings. The Afrofantasy elements made this book stand out from other quest fantasies in the field.
