Book Review: Mindscan by Robert J Sawyer

Science Fiction 4/5

Knowing he will die suddenly and at the peak of health, Jake scans his mind into a perfect robot body, but his original carcass—with its original mind intact—must live out his days on the far side of the moon, a legal non-entity. But the original Jake has other ideas. Cool ideas and exciting story!

Book Review: Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C. Clarke

Classic 4/5

Solar survey vessel commander Norton is assigned to check out a deep space object that has entered our solar system, only to discover it is in fact a space ship from an unknown civilization far beyond Pluto. Okay, it’s years since I read this book but it sticks in my memory—I loved it. The premise was plausible, giving a science-fictional-suspension-of-disbelief, the crew’s explorations were enchanting, and the ending was clever and unexpected.

Rainforest Writers’ Village

I just returned from a week-long writers’ retreat in Washington State, the Rainforest Writers’ Village on Lake Quinault. Wonderful to get focussed time to really get through a chunk of text. I was revising, rather than drafting, but it’s still good to get your head around a project!
